The Solano Manufacturers Workforce Task Force was formed in 2007 by the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Solano County. The WIB was the recipient of a $135,475 grant to establish a countywide employer-led task force to address the central need of manufacturers for an available high-skilled, competitive workforce. The core deliverable of this project was to establish a business-led taskforce that met on a monthly basis to guide the work plan, and establish a self-sufficiency plan.
The first meeting of the Task Force was held on February 23, 2007 and has continued to meet monthly at the Anheuser Busch facility. The group meets to discuss their efforts to achieve the following:
√ Assisting employers with basic labor exchange
√ Expanding the pool and building the pipeline of prospective employees/trainees
√ Training and education for prospective new-hires, and existing incumbent employees
√ Assisting with employee retention and advancement
The Task Force has established a marketing campaign called Advanced Manufacturing Programs (AMP) which seeks to build interest in manufacturing careers while myth busting the notion that careers in manufacturing are dirty jobs with low pay. The AMP campaign includes a full-color glossy brochure, a website (still under construction) and promotional cards which direct interested parties to the AMP website.
The target audiences for AMP are:
• 18-25 year olds
The Solano Manufacturers Workforce Task Force worked along side of Solano Community College to launch the Mechatronics program for the Fall 2008 Semester. Mechatronics is the combination of Manufacturing, Electronics and Robotics. The program was nearly full at the start of the semester with several of the member Manufacturers sending their employees to further their education and training in this program. Mechatronics offers both a certificate program as well as an Associate of Science degree. Additionally, the Task Force has worked together to secure a grant to expand their message into the education system, targeting students in middle schools and above.
The Solano Manufacturers Workforce Task Force continues to meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Anheuser-Busch Facility in Fairfield.
If you are a manufacturing employer and would like to learn more about joining this Task Force, please call the WIB’s Employer Hotline (707) 863-3534.
